Gaming Really Hurts!

As we are all aware, using the computer all day can lead to a lot of physical problems, such as, tendonitis, carpal tunnel, and muscle spasms.

Gaming is no different. In fact it can be worse! You are using many more muscles, hand, and joint movements when playing a video game, either on the computer or with that fancy XBox.

It’s important to exercise and stretch before any activity, let alone computer or gaming. Gaming can lead to other problems (originally posted on Yahoo!)

Constant stress on tendons, nerves and ligaments in children’s hands and arms can cause long-term problems such as tendonitis, bursitis and carpal tunnel syndrome, according to Cindy Miles, owner of a pediatrics physical therapy practice in Whitehall, Pa.

Here are some helpful hints for when you or your kids are heavy into gaming, or for any heavy use of your computer:

Keep your wrists straight, not down or bent. Better seating and desk positioning helps with this

Make sure you are sitting up with  good posture, not slumped over or bent forward. Make sure you have a good chair to support your back.

Beware the time! It’s easy to play for hours on end, but it can take its toll. Get up and stretch every so often or move around. That’s what the “pause” button is for.

If you are becoming uncomfortable, such as headaches, nausea, stiffnes, aching joints or muscle cramps, save the game and take a break!
