Old Skills

Remember how in grade school and even high school, we wrote essays, stories, reviews of books, and how-to manuals? Do you remember thinking, “why do I need to do this, what good will this do later in life?”

Well, between writing articles, blogs, SOP manuals, and reviews, I guess they came in rather handy! I had always wondered why we were taught certain life skills in school, or why parents taught certain rules or gave chores. As kids we hated it. As adults, we find it useful and appreciate it.

Even our peers, or enemies, taught us something. How to interact with the “real world” once we stepped out on our own. These interactions gave us the ability to see how we would act in certain situations, and choose the best path for us - although sometimes that path was a bit windy and dangerous! But learning from those experiences is the most important aspect of all. Did you learn from it? Are you going to do it again, Junior?

Ironically, good decisions should be repeated, bad decisions should not. We pattern our behavior according to what we want from life and how we want to be treated. Do unto others and all that. How often do we practice what we preach?

So, yes, children…those boring essays, long winded tests and lectures will be worth something to you down the road. Hang in there!

Although I have to say…I still haven’t found any use for algebra…
