Sleep and Work and Health

One thing I am learning as I grow older…I need more sleep! What’s up with that?

I used to be able to survive off of 3 or 4 hours of sleep. Now, if I don’t get at least 7, I am a zombie. In the work that I do, I sit behind a desk for a better part of the day, and I tend to get very sleepy if I haven’t rested enough.

It’s commonly thought that sitting behind a desk all day is a “cushy” job, but it’s not! It can be just as exhausting sitting, staring at a computer screen and typing all day, as it is to do a more, laborous job. In fact, at least for me, when I am more active physically in a job, I tend to feel more alert and less tired at the end of the day!

I just read a report how those who work in the office tend to be susceptible to blood clots. Gee…I wonder why? Perhaps the lack of circulation? There is no doubt that sedentary activity is more damaging to your body than a labored job or activity. Your body is designed to move and circulate the blood and use the muscles.

The best thing to do if you are in a sedentary job position, use those breaks that you are legally entitled to througout the day. Take a ten minute walk. Stretch and move around within your office space as often as possible to keep the blood going and also to keep the drowsiness away!

Eat small snacks (good food!) throughout the day to keep your metabolism up and maintain energy. Don’t consume a lot of coffee or sugary snacks as this will make things worse. Caffeine builds up in the system and basically has no effect on you anymore, and the toxins that build up in your muscles can make you feel stiff and listless.

Make sure you are getting enough sleep. I know, easier said than done, right? It seems a lot of us have busy lifestyles, even if it is sitting in front of a computer and using the internet. But the fun has got to stop at some time and your brain and body needs the rest!

Anyone else have some tips on health and body comfort?
